Taj Mahal, a mausoleum complex on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, is simply the world's most beautiful building ever. The ivory-white marble mausoleum with its four minarets sits in the middle of the northern edge of the complex. On either side of the mausoleum are buildings of red sandstone. A mosque- Kau ... Ban stands on the western side of the mausoleum and the mirror image of the mosque, Jawab or “Answer”, stands on the opposite side of it. Mosque and Jawap together provide a perfect symmetrical balance to the architecture of whole of Taj Mahal. While these two sandstone buildings stand on the red sandstone platforms, the mausoleum set on raised marble platform. With the main gateway (located on the southern edge of the complex) and garden, all these five principal elements of the complex were designed as a unified entity, which allowed no subsequent addition or alteration. One of the most beautiful structural compositions in the world, the Taj Mahal is the finest example of Mughal architecture, a blend of Indian, Persian, and Islamic styles in its harmonious proportions. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631.Shah Jahan’s wife’s name, Mumtaz Maḥal means “Chosen One of the Palace” and the name of Taj Mahal is a derivation of her name.
